Communications Specialist

The Communications Specialist provides editorial, publishing, and administrative support for the Communications unit. The Communications Specialist works closely with the Communications Project Manager to fulfill the communications needs of the organization, including the management and production of content, design, and graphics for print and electronic publications.
Responsibilities:
Editorial and Production
- Proofread and fact-check publications and online content
- Prepare graphics and photos for online and print publications
- Initiate, update, and finalize print projects in InDesign, prepare files, proofread drafts, review proofs, all under guidance of Communications Project Manager
- Build simple web pages as assigned by Online Content Manager
- Assist with web metrics reports and research projects related to website development
- Monitor basic web content and schedule regular updates
- Assist Communications Project Manager with meeting materials for Annual Meeting and Spring Meeting; participate as a member of Annual Meeting Communications committee
- Maintain article tracking process: update log and physical files; track article status throughout review process; track contracts, permission requests, and reprints; log related correspondence
- Participate in cross-unit work as needed
Administrative
- Provide general administrative support for the unit, including word processing, correspondence, scanning articles, photocopying, filing, and supply ordering
- Oversee administrative support for the unit by hiring, training, and supervising student staff
- Track and send abstracts and citations of NWP content to Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) on an ongoing basis
- Assist Communications Project Manager with photo archives and icon management
- Send and track reprint requests, respond to outside requests; maintain records of requests
- Assist Communications Project Manager with budget tracking
- Respond to email inquiries from editors@nwp.org and forwarded from nwp@nwp.org
- Schedule Outlook meetings for Communications unit and Clearinghouse team
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field
- Related work experience
- Knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop is required
- Knowledge of Filemaker, Excel, and Word is required
- Knowledge of HTML, CSS, and Dreamweaver is preferred
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including basic proofreading skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to process logistical details is required
- Knowledge of Illustrator is preferred
- Design experience is preferred
- Interest in digital photography is a plus
- Ability to travel
Compensation
$39,000 to $48,000 per year, complemented by an excellent benefits package.
